Control Systems Engineer

Job Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Control Systems Engineer, located in Windsor, CT. This position is responsible for developing control systems for industrial machinery, including selecting suitable control hardware, generating schematics, fabricating control electronics, and developing machine code and user interfaces for both PLC and PC based systems. Ability to create and edit/revise existing programming and logic is required. 


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with mechanical and process engineers, as well as customers to understand control system and machine requirements. 
  • Select suitable controls hardware within the constraints of cost, capability, and customer requirements.
  • Generate a complete control system schematic in SolidWorks Electrical. 
  • Create, test, and debug industrial control software written in a variety of standard programming languages including Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text, VB.NET, C#, as well as hardware-specific languages such as Aero Basic.
  • Perform equipment upgrades and modifications based on new requirements, taking into consideration existing hardware, software, and budgetary requirements.
  • Design and develop functional user interfaces using a variety of platforms including, .NET (VB, C#), or dedicated UI hardware and software, such as Siemens and Allen Bradley platforms. 
  • Document all code for future review and revision.
  • Work with other personnel to prepare customer-ready documentation of equipment software features.
  • Work and communicate with hardware original equipment manufacturers to interface with provided application program interfaces.
  • Assist other engineers with control system development issues.
  • Work one-on-one or in groups with customers to provide training and support. 
  • Assist with the fabrication of control panels and enclosures. 
  • Develop machine vision programs and strategies.
  • Assist with mechanical assembly.
  • Develop desktop software when commercial, off-the-shelf solutions do not exist.
  • Develop plug-ins and interfaces to allow easy communication with minimally supported hardware.
  • At times, 10% travel is required to customer sites.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to understand and create code in a variety of programming languages including IEC 61131-3 standard languages, and .NET (VB, C#).
  • Experience with control system development on Siemens and Allen-Bradley PLC platforms.
  • Ability to design and program effective and intuitive user interfaces.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other employees, production workers, customers, and vendors.
  • Ability to draft accurate electrical schematics.
  • Ability to adapt to situations which require multi-disciplinary thinking.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science, computer engineering, controls engineering, electrical engineering, robotics engineering, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of industrial and regulatory standards such as NFPA 70E, UL508A, and NEC.
  • 2+ Years of experience with controls systems.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Beckhoff TwinCAT3 control systems.
  • Experience with SolidWorks Electrical Schematic.
  • Experience with multi-threaded/Asynchronous programming.
  • Basic understanding of SQL.
  • Knowledge of industrial control communication protocols such as Profibus, ProfiNet, TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, Serial, and EtherCAT.
  • Knowledge of Aero Basic and Aerotech-based programming.
  • Knowledge of G code, and experience with CNC platforms.
  • Experience with a variety of industrial controls vendors such as Rockwell, Siemens, Beckhoff, Aerotech, SMC, Keyence, etc.
  • Experience with robotics, especially Fanuc.
  • Some mechanical design background/understanding.
  • 5+ years of experience with control systems. 
  • Familiarity with laser systems.
  • Experience designing motion systems.


Language Ability

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managerial groups, clients, vendors, and customers.


Math Ability

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts to equipment design and testing. 


Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply principles of logical and scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,). Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to non-ionizing laser radiation. The employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
